With an exciting new fashion season approaching its time to get our wardrobes in order with a good old detox!
When detoxing my wardrobe I always begin by thinking about what I want to keep, bin or give to charity. My keepers are always those pieces that I know I will wear again next season, pieces that I love and will stand the test of time like silk blouses, cashmere sweaters, timeless dresses, jackets and jumpsuits.
Storing your favourite pieces properly for next season is important, try not to squash too much into your wardrobe, you are better off folding your pieces into plastic storage boxes. Knitwear is much better stored folded as it will stretch over time on a hanger. Silk is best hanging on wooden or plastic hangers. These little tips will ensure when you go back to these pieces next season they should be instantly wearable again.
For pieces that are more one season wonders, I’ll give these to a charity store. I am ruthless with this and unless it's a real winner it will go into the charity pile. Remember though, the charity shops really don't want your old worn out joggers, these need to go in the bin!
Similarly if you have spent a small fortune on something that is really never worn then be honest with yourself, will you actually wear it or are you just mourning how much you spent on it? If it is the latter then use a re-sale site or a dress agency to turn it back into valuable cash to spend on exciting new season pieces that will make your heart skip!
My rules for wardrobe keepers:
1. If you could start your entire wardrobe afresh, would you want these pieces in it?
2. Do you feel great when you wear it?
3. Have you worn it more than 3 times in the last 12 months?
4. Does it still fit you? There's nothing more soul destroying than hanging on to clothes that just don't fit you anymore. Be realistic about your shape and dress for who you are now, I guarantee you will feel better for it.
If the answer if yes to the above questions then it's a keeper. Otherwise, it's time to say goodbye!
Now that you have detoxed your wardrobe and have space for newness, it's time to think about the building blocks for your new season wardrobe! I always start with the basics; my wardrobe core classics that will take me through to any season.
There are 10 simple basics you need, starting with a fantastic pair of black, dark navy, mid blue and grey jeans from J Brand and Paige Denim. It's then about layering pieces - fantastic shaped tee's from American Vintage and tanks in grey, navy, black, nude and white. Lightweight knitwear and cashmere is seasonless, as is a great silk shirt or blouse. A soft fluid blazer, a great fitting black dress and a classic jumpsuit from Kamali Kulture, will take you through to any season with a statement scarf. Finish off your core classics with some Ash ankle boots, a pair of trainers and some killer heels and you are ready to start thinking about those new season pieces to lift you into Spring.
The new season collections are bursting with colour, print and gorgeous fabrics so keep your eyes peeled for my new season styling videos for inspiration and my monthly picks that put a Spring in my step!
