Brand Focus: Brave Lotus

Previous Next

Be brave. Much easier to say than to be. these words however, inspired Gemma Mikayla to launch her own brand Brave Lotus. With ten years experience designing jewellery for many high street labels and also a trained makeup artist, Gemma has always been drawn to adornment and the way we present ourselves; believing what is good for the shell is also good for the soul.

A forever love of the lotus flower and its meaning, naturally led to it becoming the symbol of the brand and so Brave Lotus was born.

Colour, culture and the beauty of the natural world are all inspirations to Gemma when designing the collections. The jewellery is all handmade in the UK.

What is your inspiration behind the SS16 collection?

I wanted to create a collection for the woman with a bohemian style that was more refined and wearable for everyday whether at work or play.  The jewellery can be worn relaxed or more dressed up, it has a bohemian spirit for the urban dweller.

I have always been drawn to beautiful gemstones and have included some of my favourites in the collection – moonstone, labradorite, and turquoise.  I adore feathers and designed a range of beautiful feather charms for the collection, feathers symbolise so many lovely things I just love to work with them.

If you could pick one piece from the collection you love, which one would it be and why?

My favourite piece is the Feather In The Wind Necklace (BL-N006).  I love that this is a statement piece and a combination of mixed metals, the beautiful labradorite stone is perfectly framed within the engraved hoop.

I have always worn gold and silver together as I am such a jewellery lover I hate to choose between the two!

What has been the most exciting and challenging thing about designing the SS16 collection?

Starting Brave Lotus and launching our first collection has been the most exciting and scary thing I have ever done!  When I came up with the name Brave Lotus it was partly from knowing that I would have to be ‘brave’ to take this on.  It was a huge challenge to bring everything together for our first stand at Pure London, once we were all set up, the feelings of nervousness made way for the excitment to show our collection off to everyone!

What is the favourite part of your job?

Designing and making the jewellery, that is my happy place!  In my studio surrounded by my gems and jewels and putting new ideas together.  I get totally carried away and find it hard to stop! I have worked as a jewellery designer for 10 years now – it is very exciting to now be working on my very own collections.
